Kalkini Upazila of Madaripur District, located in the southernmost part of Dhaka Division, belongs to Ganga Bidhaut Low Alluvial Zone and Agriculture Environment Zone (AEZ) No. 12, 13, 14 and 19. Consisting of 15 unions and 01 municipality, this upazila with an area of 283.40 square kilometers has a current population of 273258 people. The total number of agricultural families is 52715. The main food grains and cash crops of the upazila are Boro, Aman, Aush, Jute, Mesta, Aman, Sugarcane, pulses and oil crops. Although most of the land is medium low, the cultivation of vegetable and spice crops is increasing day by day, especially Uchche, vegetable crops, onions have already been cultivated as profitable. The area under vegetable cultivation is gradually increasing due to the initiative of expanding the cultivation of various vegetables in the garden of the homesteads including creeping vegetables in the monsoon season.Growing fruits and vegetables to meet family nutritional needs is becoming popular. In this study, it was found that there are 10 fruit trees per homestead. Every house has 20 types of fruit trees for which the agriculture office is working.
Constraints to agricultural production in Kalkini Upazila include flood, drought and irrigation water problems. Due to the limited availability of groundwater irrigation and non-flow of tidal water in various canals from mid-January to February, there is an irrigation crisis for Boro crops in several areas every year.
However, special expansion work to increase production on the one hand and reduce production cost on the other hand has been strengthened through the expansion of technologies related to the use of fine urea, drum seeder and LCC. Despite various obstacles, there is an opportunity to increase the agricultural production by accelerating the agricultural extension program by combining the soil of the upazila, the farmer's own resources and new technologies.
